Mound View Cemetery, located in the northern part of Mount Vernon, is owned and operated by the City of Mount Vernon. Spanning over 48 acres, this historic cemetery was founded in 1833 and takes its name from an ancient Indian mound situated in the cemetery's western section. While no complete records were kept until 1853, it is believed that many of the individuals buried here, whose death dates predate the cemetery’s establishment, were relocated from the Presbyterian Cemetery behind the Presbyterian Church at 105 East Chestnut Street.
Blanche George, a former clerk at the cemetery office from 1937 to 1947, shared that there were no full-time clerks until a few years before her arrival. Before that time, cemetery records were maintained by the sexton or superintendent.
Mound View Cemetery is the final resting place for many individuals who played significant roles in both local and national history. Highlights, including notable individuals, monuments, and buildings, can be found in the self-guided walking tour.
